A bipartisan group of U.S. senators introduced legislation on March 7, 2018 to address a major threat to the long-term health of the U.S. aviation maintenance sector. A persistent shortage of qualified maintenance technicians is limiting aviation business growth.
The bill is authored by, Senators James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). The proposed legislation establishes a new pilot program to train maintenance professionals. The bill also aids veterans’ transition to civilian careers and incentivizes new technician recruiting. Notably, the legislation proposes grants of up to $500,000 per year for businesses, unions, schools and governmental entities. These groups will partner to pursue creative solutions to one of the aviation community’s most pressing strategic challenges.
